LENSTECH STANDARD FOR READING GLASSES (LCO993)

1.0 Scope, Purpose and Rationale

1.1 Scope: The Lenstech standard for reading glasses applies to near vision spectacles, which are available without a prescription and are intended as an aid for vision at near distances. Such spectacles are not intended to replace prescribed corrective eyewear nor to replace professional eye examinations and care.

This standard contains specifications and test methods for the lenses, frames and the completed spectacles.

This standard does not apply to safety eyewear as defined in the latest issue of American National Standard Institute ANSI Z87.1, or ophthalmic, prescription eyewear as defined in the latest issues of ANSI Z 80.1 and ANSI Z80.5, or sunglass and fashion eyewear as defined in the latest issue of ANSI Z80.3.

1.2 Purpose: The purpose of this document is to establish performance standards for nonprescription near vision spectacles which are commonly called "Reading Glasses". No attempt is made to restrict technological improvements which can result in products that meet or exceed the performance objectives of this standard.

1.3 Rationale: Many millions of pairs of non-prescription reading glasses are sold each year in the United States. There is a vital need for a standard of quality to provide assurance to the consumer that the product is designed and manufactured in such a manner that it will serve its intended purpose.
